AUSTIN, Texas—The Texas Exes Hispanic Alumni Advisory Committee’s Fourth Annual Hispanic Alumni Reunion and Fiesta on Sept. 3 will feature presentation of two student scholarship awards honoring the late State Representative Irma Rangel and Dr. Ricardo Romo, president of The University of Texas at San Antonio.
The festive fund-raising event from 7-10 p.m. at the Etter-Harbin Alumni Center, 2110 San Jacinto Blvd., will include musical entertainment, a silent auction to benefit the scholarship fund, an appearance by Longhorn Band members and a prize for the guest wearing the most “spirited” orange-and-white outfit. Admission is $25 per person for Texas Exes members and $35 for non-members with the proceeds going toward scholarships.
The Texas Exes Hispanic Alumni/University Co-op Scholarship will be presented to two students from The University of Texas at Austin. The Texas Exes Hispanic Alumni Advisory Committee has endowed the scholarships that each year honor a distinguished alumnus from the university. The awards this year recognize Rangel and Romo as outstanding Hispanic Texas Exes. Rangel was known as a strong supporter of education and was instrumental in passing the “Top 10 Percent” legislation to support diversity in higher education. Romo was a vice provost at The University of Texas at Austin before being selected to serve as president of The University of Texas at San Antonio. Romo also was a track star at The University of Texas at Austin while attending as an undergraduate student.
Texas Exes, the university’s alumni association, will host the reunion fiesta that will bring the university’s graduates from across the state and nation back to campus for several activities, including Bevo’s Retirement Party on the Alumni Center Plaza from 5-6:30 p.m. on Sept. 3, and a pre-game party at the alumni center three hours prior to kick-off of The University of Texas at Austin’s football game against the University of North Texas.
