AUSTIN, Texas—Three faculty members at The University of Texas at Austin—Dr. George Georgiou, Dr. Paul Macdonald and Dr. Stephen Martin—have been elected fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
Georgiou holds the Joe C. Walter Jr. Chair In Engineering. He is also the Paul D. and Betty Robertson Meek Centennial Fellow in Engineering. Georgiou was elected for technological advances in protein production that are facilitating the development of new therapeutics and diagnostics.
Macdonald chairs the Section of Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology in the School of Biological Sciences and holds the Mr. and Mrs. Robert P. Doherty Jr. Regents Chair in Molecular Biology. The member of the College of Natural Sciences was elected for his research into how genetic material called mRNA determines the way in which anatomical regions in fruit flies are organized.
Martin is the chairman of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry in Natural Sciences and holder of the M. June and J. Virgil Waggoner Regents Chair in Chemistry. He was elected for distinguished contributions to the fields of chemistry, including synthetic and organic chemistry.
The American Association for the Advancement of Science is the world’s largest general scientific society and publisher of the journal Science. Macdonald, Martin and Georgiou are among the 308 newly elected fellows. They will be honored in February at the association’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C.
