AUSTIN, Texas—A 23-year-old graduate student from The University of Texas at Austin died Wednesday (Jan. 19) in Washington, D.C., where he was to have performed in the Texas Longhorn Band during Thursday’s presidential inaugural parade.

Judson Daniel Davis, son of Linda and Warren Davis of Tyler, Texas, was on a bus with other band members Wednesday when the bus driver noticed he had remained in his seat when other students had left the bus to go to lunch. Paramedics were notified when Davis did not respond and the student was taken to George Washington Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The cause of death has not been determined.

Davis, a first-year graduate student in kinesiology, was a trombonist who performed with the university’s basketball band in addition to performing with the Big Bertha crew on the Texas Longhorn Band.

Grief counselors were being provided through the Office of the Dean of Students at The University of Texas at Austin to talk with Davis’ fellow band members in Washington, D.C., and the university’s Counseling and Mental Health Center is providing counselors to talk with Davis’ friends and classmates on campus.
