AUSTIN, Texas—The SBC Foundation, the philanthropic arm of SBC Communications Inc., has given $1 million to The University of Texas at Austin for programs to strengthen math, science and engineering education and promote the use of technology in teaching and learning.
Programs in five of the university’s schools and colleges, as well as the Office of the Provost, will receive portions of the grant. One major recipient is the Texas Regional Collaboratives for Excellence in Science Teaching, which provides professional development to science teachers across the state. Other increments will fund internships in the UTeach teacher preparation program, diversity programs in science and engineering, renovation of a math/science classroom, development of a Web-based math tool kit for teachers and a classroom observation area for the UT Elementary School. Outreach efforts receiving support include the “Virtual Science” exhibit at the Texas Memorial Museum and a public lecture series of the Environmental Science Institute.
“The SBC Foundation’s generous gift will enhance education at all levels through teacher development and outreach, use of new educational technologies, and programs that promote diversity in science and engineering,” said university President Larry R. Faulkner. “We are deeply grateful for SBC’s partnership in promoting scientific and technological understanding among students and the general public.”
The gift also includes the installation of wireless access technology in the Blanton Museum of Art’s new building, which is under construction. Hand-held multimedia devices and other innovations will enhance the experience of visitors when the building opens in February 2006.
The SBC Foundation supports programs designed to increase access to information technologies, broaden technology training and professional development, and effectively integrate new technologies to enhance education and economic development, especially for under-served populations. The foundation’s higher education funding is focused on the development of a diverse technology workforce, integration of technology in K-16 instruction, and technology curriculum development and delivery.
Total support to the university from SBC companies and the SBC Foundation now stands at more than $3.7 million, including research funding. In addition to its outright grants, the company also extends the reach of its employees’ philanthropy by matching their individual gifts. It has given the university $396,400 in matching funds, including more than $78,000 for 2004.
