AUSTIN, Texas—The Dalai Lama, the exiled leader of the Tibetan people and winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, will visit The University of Texas at Austin on Sept. 20, and give a public talk at 4 p.m. in the Frank Erwin Center, 1701 Red River St.

The visit of the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, is sponsored by the university’s Texas Union Lectureship, which invited the world figure to speak to members of the university community and the public. Admission to the talk is free with a ticket.

“The Texas Union is pleased to bring His Holiness the Dalai Lama to the university for his first visit to Austin,” said Andy Smith, director of The Texas Union. “It will be a unique opportunity for our students and the community to hear a public talk by such a noted and respected international figure.”

The Texas Union Lectureship was established by the Texas Union Advisory Committee with contributions from university alumni. The purpose of the lectureship is to bring national and international leaders to campus to address the university’s students.

Ticket distribution for the public talk will begin at 7 a.m. on Sept. 6 at two locations: the Erwin Center box office for the public and the Texas Union Student Events Center ticket office for university students, faculty and staff members, who must present a university identification card to obtain tickets. Distribution is limited to two tickets per person and tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Requests for advance tickets, group tickets, will call or mailed tickets will not be accepted.

The Dalai Lama’s talk will be simulcast to the Texas Union Ballroom and the Texas Union Theatre. The talk also will be carried via live feed on Campus Cable Television.

The Dalai Lama is the spiritual and temporal leader of his people and a widely published author. He also is known as a tireless advocate for peace, compassion, human rights and tolerance.

More information about the event, including directions to the ticket distribution locations, is available online at the Texas Union Dalai Lama Web site.
