AUSTIN, Texas—The power of the individual to effect change, even on a global level, will be the focus of a public talk by the Dalai Lama when he visits The University of Texas at Austin on Sept. 20.

“Individual Responsibility in the Global Community” is the title of the public talk that begins at 4 p.m. in the university’s Frank Erwin Center, 1701 Red River St.

The visit of the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso, the leader of the Tibetan people and winner of the 1989 Nobel Peace Prize, is sponsored by the university’s Texas Union Lectureship, which invited the world figure to speak to members of the university community and the public. Admission to the talk is free with a ticket.

Several years ago, in a speech to the United Nations World Conference on Human Rights, the Dalai Lama emphasized the interdependence of individuals, peoples and nations. He said, “I, for one, strongly believe that individuals can make a difference in society. Every individual has a responsibility to help move our global family in the right direction and we must each assume that responsibility,”

The Texas Union Advisory Council established the Texas Union Lectureship with contributions from university alumni. The purpose of the lectureship is to bring national and international leaders to campus to address the university’s students.

Ticket distribution for the public talk will begin at 7 a.m. on Sept. 6 at two locations. The Erwin Center box office will distribute tickets for the general public. The Texas Union Student Events Center ticket office will distribute tickets for University of Texas at Austin students, faculty and staff, who must present a current, valid University of Texas at Austin ID to obtain tickets. Distribution is limited to two tickets per person and tickets will be distributed on a first come, first served basis. Requests for advance tickets, group tickets, will call or mailed tickets will not be accepted.

The Dalai Lama’s talk will be simulcast to the Texas Union Ballroom and the Texas Union Theatre. The talk also will be carried via live feed on Campus Cable Television.

More information about the event, including directions to the ticket distribution locations, is available online at the Texas Union’s Dalai Lama Web site.
