AUSTIN, Texas—Dr. John Leckenby, professor and the Everett D. Collier Centennial Chair in Communication in the Department of Advertising at The University of Texas at Austin, has been named a Fellow of the American Academy of Advertising.

The Fellow designation, which recognizes a leader who has contributed notably to the improvement of advertising education, was presented at the 2006 American Academy of Advertising Annual Conference in Reno, Nev. Twenty-eight people have been named Fellows since the American Academy of Advertising was established in 1958.

A professor in the Department of Advertising since 1985, Leckenby is one of the most cited scholars in advertising media research. He has made significant contributions to the body of knowledge of advertising management, media planning and interactive advertising.

“John Leckenby has been and continues to be one of the most important faculty in our department,” said Isabella Cunningham, chair of the Department of Advertising in the College of Communication. “His record of scholarship has brought national renown to our program and his dedication to graduate and undergraduate education has contributed to the development of our outstanding curriculum. His mentoring of young faculty has inspired a fertile and outstanding stream of research second to none. John is also a great friend and we couldn’t be prouder of his association with our department and our university.”

Leckenby was chairman of the Department of Advertising from 1985 to 1987. He has served on the Copy Research Council of the Advertising Research Foundation, and as president of the American Academy of Advertising. He is director of the Center for Interactive Advertising at The University of Texas at Austin and co-founder and co-editor of the “Journal of Interactive Advertising.”

The American Academy of Advertising is an organization of advertising scholars and professionals with an interest in advertising and advertising education. The academy fosters research relevant to the field and provides a forum for the exchange of ideas among its academic and professional members.
