AUSTIN, Texas—Three faculty members of The University of Texas at Austin have been named recipients of Sloan Research Fellowships for 2006.
They are Martin Olsson and Yen-Hsi Richard Tsai, assistant professors in the Department of Mathematics, and Thomas Truskett, assistant professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering.
The Alfred P. Sloan Foundation makes the awards for early career scientists who “show the most outstanding promise of making fundamental contributions to new knowledge.”
Each Sloan fellow receives $45,000 over two years to be used on research of the fellow’s choice.
Olsson works in algebraic and arithmetic geometry. His research has applications in several areas of mathematics including geometry and number theory.
Tsai, also a member of the Institute for Computational Engineering and Sciences, centers his research on the development of computational methods and their applications to problems in physical and biological sciences and other areas such as control and computer vision.
Truskett researches the structural, kinetic, and thermodynamic properties of protein solutions, colloidal suspensions, and other materials that exist in soft, condensed phases. He uses statistical mechanics and molecular simulations to study these systems, which can play an important role in applications that range from optical devices for communication or computer hardware to new drug-delivery systems.
