AUSTIN, Texas—Dr. Anthony Alofsin, professor in the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin, has been awarded the 2006 Wright Spirit Award (professional category) by the Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy.
The award is the highest honor given by the conservancy and recognizes individuals who, through artistic, architectural, scholarly, professional or other endeavors embody the spirit of Frank Lloyd Wright. Wright is considered to be one of America’s greatest architects and one of the most significant artists in the nation’s history.
Alofsin was recognized for his five-volume reference work, “Frank Lloyd Wright: An Index to the Taliesin Correspondence,” which is considered an invaluable reference tool for Wright scholars and researchers around the world.
“This award recognizes Professor Alofsin’s pioneering scholarship on Frank Lloyd Wright as well as his sustained leadership,” said Fritz Steiner, dean of the School of Architecture.
Alofsin, director of the doctor’s and master’s degree programs in architectural history, is recognized as one of the world’s leading authorities on the architecture of Wright. His numerous publications have been translated into various languages, including German and Italian. From 1990-93 he was director of the Center for American Architecture and Design at The University of Texas at Austin. He has been a visiting scholar at the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, senior fellow at the National Gallery of Arts in Washington, D.C., visiting fellow at the Harvard Graduates School of Design and fellow at the International Forschungszentrum Kulturwissenschaften in Vienna.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Building Conservancy, an international preservation organization, is based in Chicago. Founded in 1989, its mission is to facilitate the preservation and maintenance of the remaining structures designed by Wright through education, advocacy, preservation easements and technical services.
