AUSTIN, Texas—Dr. Judy Copeland Ashcroft, director of the Division of Instructional Innovation and Assessment (DIIA) at The University of Texas at Austin, has been appointed dean of the university’s Division of Continuing Education, effective Feb. 1, 2007.

Ashcroft will fill a vacancy that will be created when Dr. Thomas M. Hatfield completes his term serving 30 years and one month as dean on Jan. 31, 2007, and becomes a senior research fellow in the Center for American History, said Dr. Stephen A. Monti, interim executive vice president and provost.
“Dr. Ashcroft has the strategic vision, professional capabilities, commitment to excellence and the leadership skills to be a superb dean,” said Monti.
Ashcroft praised Hatfield’s accomplishments in creating a strong program serving the state of Texas and said she looks forward to returning to the Division of Continuing Education, where she had been a director prior to becoming associate vice president and the first director of the Division of Instructional Innovation and Assessment in 2001.
“The first-class intellectual talent and abundance of can-do attitude at The University of Texas at Austin make it an incredible place to work,” Ashcroft said. “This is the perfect opportunity for an educator who is a native Texan. I look forward to returning to Continuing Education, to increasing collaboration with colleagues on campus and to supporting President (William) Powers’ goals for the university.”
Ashcroft was graduated summa cum laude from Texas Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in English, speech communications, Latin and education. She earned a master’s degree at Texas Tech in American literature and community college teaching, and a doctor’s degree in higher education focused on administration, adult and continuing education, college teaching, and curriculum and instruction.
