AUSTIN, Texas—A team of finance students from the McCombs School of Business at The University of Texas at Austin won the stock pitch competition at the Fourth Annual Stern Summit on Global Business at New York University, Oct. 12-14.

The winning team consisted of Alex Morales, Katie Ross and Mark Tait, three seniors competing against 125 students from 25 business schools from across the nation.

The theme of this year’s conference at NYU was emerging markets, so each team was challenged with pitching a stock from a developing country.

McCombs pitched Li Ning, a Chinese sports apparel company. “We decided on Li Ning due to China’s strong economic performance, great sector fundamentals and a compelling growth story for the Li Ning brand in China,” Tait said.

Morales, Ross and Tait were selected for the competition based on the strength of their applications and also because all three had internships this past summer in New York.

“Their presentation was strong, compelling and interesting,” said Kelly Kamm, director of the Financial Analyst Program at McCombs. “They addressed risks and supported the strong buy recommendation with exceedingly sharp analysis, professional demeanor and the ability to field questions and provide additional insights on the company.”

The three students were assisted by JyrHong Soo, their MBA manager, who worked with the team and helped critique their presentation.

“The combination of our technical skills and the intensity of a competitive environment made for a successful team,” Ross said.
