AUSTIN, Texas—Steven W. Leslie, dean of the College of Pharmacy at The University of Texas at Austin since 1998, has been named provost of the university.

Leslie, 60, succeeds Sheldon Ekland-Olson, who resigned as provost last May. Leslie was named after a national search. Ekland-Olson has returned to the faculty in the Department of Sociology.
Leslie’s appointment is effective Jan. 15. M. Lynn Crismon, associate dean for clinical affairs and professor of pharmacy, has been named interim dean of the College of Pharmacy.
“I am extremely pleased to name Steve Leslie as the university’s new chief academic officer,” said William Powers Jr., president of the university. “His background and experience as an educator, researcher and administrator have prepared him well for this important post.
“Dean Leslie has the highest academic standards and highest aspirations for our university. His work has earned the respect of the leadership of the campus.”
“I am very pleased to hear that Dean Leslie has been appointed the new provost for The University of Texas at Austin,” said Linda Golden, chair of the Faculty Council and professor of marketing. “He is an excellent selection. Dean Leslie’s leadership throughout the past decade at the university will serve us well.”
Leslie, the Bauerle Centennial Professor in the College of Pharmacy and holder of the James T. Doluisio Chair, joined the university in 1974 as an assistant professor in the College of Pharmacy. With the exception of two years at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Medical Center, he has spent his professional career at the university.
An internationally noted researcher in alcoholism and alcohol abuse, Leslie was director of the university’s Institute for Neuroscience from 1986 to 1992. The interdisciplinary institute was composed of 45 faculty members from six colleges.
He earned his bachelor’s degree in pharmacy in 1969, his master’s degree in pharmacology/toxicology in 1972 and his doctor’s degree in pharmacology/toxicology in 1974, all from Purdue University.
