AUSTIN, Texas—John Yancey, interim chairperson of the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Austin since 2005, has been appointed the new chairperson of the department, effective Jan. 16.

Yancey has been both a faculty member and administrator at The University of Texas at Austin. With his newest appointment, he will be the holder of the John D. Murchison Regents Professorship in Art. He was appointed an assistant professor in Art and Art History in 1993, then an associate professor and later, professor and holder of the Marlene and Mort Meyerson Fellowship in Art. Yancey became acting chair of the Department of Art and Art History in 2005.
“Professor Yancey has the vision, determination and high expectations that are essential in an academic leader who will move the Department of Art and Art History to national preeminence,” said Douglas Dempster, interim dean of the College of Fine Arts.
Yancey, the first African American chairperson in the history of the department, will be the chair of Art and Art History through 2010.
“The University of Texas at Austin has a well-deserved, international reputation for excellence, and I feel privileged to be a part of such a magnificent institution and academic community,” said Yancey. “This is a pivotal time in the history of our department, and I enter this new role as chair with great optimism and determination for continued excellence and prominence among the nation’s leading programs.”
Prior to joining The University of Texas at Austin, Yancey held a faculty position at Roosevelt University in Chicago and a lecturer position at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. His murals and public art commissions can be found throughout Texas and Illinois, with particular concentrations in Austin and Chicago.
Yancey, a Chicago native, earned his bachelor of fine arts degree from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his master of fine arts degree from Georgia Southern University.
