AUSTIN, Texas—Dr. Darlene Grant, associate professor of social work and associate dean of graduate studies at The University of Texas at Austin, has been awarded the 2007 Rosa Parks Award from the American Association for Affirmative Action (AAAA).
The award recognizes an individual who is committed to civil rights and social issues and serves as a role model and leader. Grant will receive the award at the association’s annual awards gala April 27 in Austin. Henry Cisneros, former U.S. secretary of housing and urban development, is speaking at the event.
Grant’s research focuses on incarcerated women and their children, family systems and adolescent psychiatric issues. She has been involved with Girl Scout Troop 1500, a program for women in prison and their daughters, since its inception.
"Dr. Grant truly personifies this award," said Sara Jackson Watson of the university Equal Opportunity Services, who nominated Grant for the national honor. "She is a wonderful role model for everyone and women in particular. Her hard work and dedication to the betterment of society is exemplary. I believe we are fortunate to have her here at the university."
Founded in 1974, the AAAA is a national not-for-profit association of professionals working in the areas of affirmative action, equal opportunity and diversity. The association, which seeks to enhance access and equality in employment, economic and educational opportunities, is hosting its annual conference in Austin April 25-28.
The National Association of Social Workers named Grant 2006 Social Worker of the Year. She was recognized last week by the Texas Legislature for her involvement with Troop 1500.
