Dr. King Davis Appointed to National Board to Advise Ways to Improve Mental Health Care

Dr. King Davis, professor of social work and executive director of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health at The University of Texas at Austin, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Center for Mental Health Services National Advisory Council.

AUSTIN, Texas—Dr. King Davis, professor of social work and executive director of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health at The University of Texas at Austin, has been appointed to a three-year term on the Center for Mental Health Services National Advisory Council.

The advisory council makes recommendations to the U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services in the areas of substance abuse and mental health services with the ultimate goal of transforming mental health care in the United States.

The council is composed of 12 leaders in the mental health care disciplines as well as members of the public. Davis will attend his first council meeting July 24-26 in Washington, D.C.

Davis’ area of expertise includes mental health policies and large systems administration, especially as related to families of color and severe mental illness. One of his most recent projects was "A longitudinal study of admissions, by race and socio-economic status, to state mental institutions, 1960 – 2006."

Davis holds the Robert Lee Sutherland Chair in Mental Health and Social Policy in the School of Social Work. He has been executive director of the Hogg Foundation since 2003. The foundation offers numerous funding opportunities and resources in support of its mission to promote improved mental health in Texas.
