AUSTIN, Texas—James W. McKie, professor emeritus of economics, died Oct. 30, following a long illness.
McKie earned his bachelor’s degree from The University of Texas at Austin in 1943. After serving in the Army and teaching stints at Williams College, Harvard and Vanderbilt University, he returned to the university as professor of economics and dean of the newly formed College of Social and Behavioral Sciences. He later served as chair of the Department of Economics, and held the Edward Everett Hale Centennial Professor of Economics Chair. He was also recipient of the College of Liberal Arts Pro Bene Meritis award in 2002.
Professionally, McKie served as president of the Southern Economic Association, visiting fellow of the Brookings Institution and visiting professor at Harvard and at the University of California at Berkeley. He was for several years a member of Time magazine’s Board of Economic Advisors, and was the author of several books and numerous articles on economics.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 60 years, Catherine Wharton McKie, daughters Julia and Ellen of Austin, son David of Denver, and grandson Ian McCaul of Minneapolis.
A private cremation is planned, and at the request of the deceased there will be no public services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice Austin.
