Dr. King Davis, executive director of the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health, has been selected by the Texas Psychological Association (TPA) for the 2007 Outstanding Public Contribution to Psychology Award in recognition of his dedication to and influence in Texas mental health policy and service delivery.
As the American Psychological Association’s state affiliate, TPA works to advance psychology as a science and profession and as a means of promoting health, education and human welfare. The organization annually recognizes Texans who have made exceptional contributions to the field of psychology.
Dr. Davis has been the Hogg Foundation’s executive director since 2003. He also holds the Robert Lee Sutherland Endowed Chair in Mental Health and Social Policy in The University of Texas at Austin’s School of Social Work, a position he has held since 2000.
Dr. Davis recently was appointed to serve a three-year term on the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration’s Center for Mental Health Services National Advisory Council. The council makes recommendations to the U.S. Secretary of the Department of Health and Human Services in the areas of substance abuse and mental health services.
A former commissioner of the Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation and Substance Abuse Services from 1990 to 1994, Dr. Davis is co-author of "The Color of Social Policy," published in 2004 by CSWE Press. In 2002, he received a lifetime achievement award from the Council on Social Work Education.
Dr. Davis served on the groundbreaking Surgeon General’s Workgroup on Mental Health, Culture, Race and Ethnicity and contributed to the report on cultural competence for the President’s New Freedom Commission on Mental Health, which was released in 2003.
