The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) UT Student Chapter’s Steel Bridge Team finished in first place at the Texas-Mexico Region competition. The team placed first in every category, including construction time, construction economy, lightness/weight, stiffness and structural efficiency. The goal of the competition is to follow a set of design specifications, received six months in advance, to build as quickly as possible a model bridge that can support 2,500 pounds. The UT ASCE Steel Bridge Team built its winning structure, weighing 135 pounds with a 21-foot span, in about 6.5 minutes. The team advances to the national competition in Gainesville, Fla.
