Event:The School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin hosts an opening reception for “A.D. Stenger: Designer/Builder,” an exhibit of the works of local prominent architect Arthur Dallas (A.D.) Stenger.

Background: A.D. Stenger was a renowned local developer, architect and builder in Austin during the late 1940s through the late 1990s. Many of his houses are in the Barton Hills area. His career began while he was enrolled as a student in the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin. Stenger spent decades building houses for numerous creative Austinites including humorists John Henry Faulk and Cactus Pryor. Acting as developer, architect and builder, Stenger’s houses reflected modern designs with touches of “homey comfort” in response to a demand for an affordable, modern lifestyle.
Along with original documentation on several of Stenger’s houses, the exhibit will feature five of his residences with new architectural models and rendered drawings alongside historic drawings, newspaper articles and photographs. The exhibit will also include a video of a polar bear hunting expedition in the Arctic Circle that Stenger took part in.
Stenger will be one of the featured architects in this spring’s annual tour of homes hosted by Heritage Society of Austin.
