Four University of Texas at Austin alumni were honored with the 2008 Outstanding Young Texas Ex Award at a ceremony held at the Alumni Center on May 17. The Texas Exes inaugurated the award in 1980 to recognize young alumni who are distinguished in their fields and have demonstrated a continuing interest in The University of Texas at Austin and the Texas Exes. A recipient must be younger than 40 on January 1 of the year in which the award is presented.
This year’s recipients were:
- Christina Joy Allen, B.A. ’98, J.D. ’01, is the Coordinator for Grant Development and Research for La Marque Independent School District. She has also been highly involved with the community of La Marque and was honored by the Galveston County Daily News for her service and contributions.
- Michael Appleman, B.A. ’90, J.D. ’93, is a partner in the law firm of Cantey and Hanger, L.L.P. He has served on the board for several organizations in Fort Worth and has volunteered in numerous positions for both The University of Texas and the Texas Exes.
- Timothy Price Crain, B.S. ’95, M.S. ’99, Ph.D. ’00, is an aerospace engineer for NASA Johnson Space Center. He leads the guidance, navigation and control team for the Crew Exploration Vehicle, NASA’s next generation manned spacecraft.
- Betty Nguyen, B.J. ’95, is a news anchor for CNN/U.S. and anchors the weekend edition of CNN Newsroom. She has anchored several breaking news events, including the death of Pope John Paul II and the London bombing attacks in 2005
