The Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs’ Center for Health and Social Policy and the Robert S. Strauss Center for International Security and Law will welcome Health and Human Services Secretary Michael O. Leavitt to the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and Museum on Oct. 30 for a conversation titled “From the American People: Health and U.S. Foreign Policy” as part of the Elspeth Rostow Distinguished Lecture Series for Public Policy Leadership.
Through the Initiative for Health Diplomacy in the Americas, Leavitt has organized the effort for health programs in North and South America, particularly among the nations of Central America. Leavitt will focus his remarks on the United States’ role in improving global health and the emerging idea of “health diplomacy” in international relations.
LBJ School Dean James B. Steinberg emphasized the importance of getting students, faculty and the public involved in the discussion about international health policy.
“As the world becomes more interconnected,” Steinberg said, “it is increasingly important for U.S. policymakers to take an active role in shaping global solutions to transnational issues like public health. Secretary Leavitt’s innovative efforts reflect a clear awareness of the importance of U.S. leadership in this arena.”
Prior to being secretary of health and human services, Leavitt headed the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and was a three-term governor of Utah.
The event is open to the public and will begin with a reception at 5:15p.m. followed by Leavitt’s presentation at 6 p.m. Space islimited and registration is required.
