The College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin has honored three students with a Larry Temple Scholarship.
Temple Scholars receive a $33,000 scholarship, $11,000 per year renewable for two years. Application for the scholarship is open to any student achieving a 3.9 or 4.0 grade-point average during his or her freshman year.
The 2008-09 Larry Temple Scholarship winners are:
- William Cochran, a Plan II, French and economics sophomore. He graduated from Tom Clark High School in San Antonio, where he was valedictorian of his class.
- Nicole Masole, a Plan II and government sophomore. She graduated third in her class from Cedar Hill High School in Cedar Hill.
- Hillary Rodriguez, a religious studies and history junior. She graduated ninth in her class from Midway High School in Waco.
Sixty-two students applied for the highly competitive scholarship, according to Larry Carver, director of the Liberal Arts Honors Program. The recipients will join four other Temple Scholars in an enriched program of supplemental advising and field trips. They also will have special opportunities to interact with faculty and community leaders.
The Temple Scholarship honors Larry Eugene Temple, an Austin lawyer and public servant. Temple earned a bachelor’s degree from the university in 1957 and a law degree in 1959. A champion of higher education, Temple was chairman of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board, as well as chairman of the 1985 Select Committee on Higher Education. Temple has been a member of the university’s Development Board, its Centennial Commission and the Commission of 125.
