LBJ School dean named President Obama’s deputy secretary of state nominee

James B. Steinberg, dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs, has been nominated by President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden to serve as Deputy Secretary of State. Steinberg became dean of the Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs on Jan. 1, 2006. Before joining the university, he was the vice president and director of Foreign Policy Studies at the Brookings Institution in Washington, D.C. (20012005), where he supervised a wide-ranging research program on U.S. foreign policy. From December 1996 to August 2000, he was deputy national security adviser to President Bill Clinton. During that period he also served as the president’s personal representative to the 1998 and 1999 G-8 summits.
