A public forum on the findings of The University of Texas at Austin’s recently released Faculty Gender Equity Report will be held Feb. 4 at 3 p.m. in Room 212 of the university’s Main Building.
The co-chairs of the Gender Equity Task Force will present highlights of the report, which will be followed by a panel and audience discussion of strategies addressing the findings, said Professor Linda Golden, steering committee chair of the Faculty Women’s Organization, which is co-sponsoring the event with several other university offices and centers.
Among the recommendations of the report, presented in November by the task force to the Office of the Provost, was that the university develop and enact a five-to-10-year gender equity plan to “reduce or eliminate faculty gender inequity-specifically with respect to hiring, promotion, salaries and governance.”
This is the beginning of the “What do we do about this?” step in the process, said Golden. She said the report is available online.
The co-chairs of the Gender Equity Task force are professors J Strother Moore, chair of the Department of Computer Sciences, and Gretchen Ritter, a professor of government and director of the Center for Women’s and Gender Studies.
Members of the panel will include Vice Provost Judith Langlois; Victoria E. Rodriguez, vice provost and dean of graduate studies; Thomas W. Gilligan, dean of the McCombs School of Business; Gregory L. Fenves, dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering; Mary Ann Rankin, dean of the College of Natural Sciences; and Faculty Ombudsperson Mary Steinhardt.
