Noted author Evelyn White will present a lecture titled, “The Universe Provides: Alice Walker, a Hammock and the Art of Biography,” discussing her 10 years as the official biographer of the Pulitzer Prize-winning writer of “The Color Purple.”
The lecture, at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, March 11, is hosted by the Gender and Sexuality Center and Multicultural Information Center, both part of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at The University of Texas at Austin, in celebration of International Women’s Day.
The lecture will be held in the Main Building, Room 212, on the university campus. A reception will follow. The event is free and open to the public.

White is the author of the acclaimed biography “Alice Walker: A Life.” She is also the author of “Chain Chain Change: For Black Women in Abusive Relationships,” editor of “The Black Women’s Health Book: Speaking for Ourselves” and a co-author of the photography book, “The African Americans.”
White is a former reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle. Her articles, essays and reviews have also appeared in such publications as the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the Arizona Republic, the Seattle Times, the Vancouver Sun, the Philadelphia Inquirer and Smithsonian, Essence and Ms. magazines.
At present, she is at work on a photo narrative book about the historic and contemporary Black presence in her sheep-farming community of Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada.
