Dr. Elizabeth Richmond-Garza will guide a discussion of Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” on April 6 and Dr. Jennifer Wilks will direct a discussion of “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” by Junot Díaz on April 21 in events hosted by the University of Texas Libraries for undergraduate students moderated by English Department faculty.
The events run from 6:30 to 8 p.m. The discussions are limited to 25 participants and refreshments will be provided. Location of the event will be provided to registrants. Stoker’s Dracula was based on legend, but incorporated the fear inspired by Jack the Ripper with the Victorian gothic novel to create an intrigue that has spawned generations of imitations and retelling.
Díaz won the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle award for his first novel, which follows the life of a Dominican “ghetto nerd” in New Jersey, told in a comic/realist style punctuated by street lexicon and an abundance of pop-culture references.
