Background: In celebration of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Awareness Week the student organization Queer People of Color and Allies and the Gender and Sexuality Center present performance artist Adelina Anthony.
Anthony, a Xicana-Indígena lesbian multi-disciplinary artist, hails originally from San Antonio. She lives in Los Angeles. Her work addresses colonization, feminism, trauma, memory, gender, race and ethnicity, sexuality, immigration, health and issues generally affecting the LBGT communities. She believes access to a progressive education, transgressive art and therapy empowers individuals and communities to make healthy and transformative life choices. She uses critical comedy or dramatic force to affect her audiences. Her most popular comedy, “Mastering Sex and Tortillas!” was nominated and then selected as Best Solo Performance by Premios Sin Limite 2008. In the previous year the show was nominated for Best Solo Performance in 2007 by L.A. Weekly. “Mastering Sex and Tortillas!” and her newest comedic works: “La Angry Xicana?!” and “La Sad Girl” continue to tour successfully.
Event sponsors: The Gender and Sexuality Center, a unit of the Division of Diversity and Community Engagement at The University of Texas at Austin, provides safe spaces for all members of the university community to explore, organize and promote learning around issues of gender and sexuality. The center also fosters a greater responsiveness to the needs of women and the LGBTQ communities through education, outreach and advocacy.
Queer People of Color and Allies (QPOCA) exists to contribute to the self empowerment and visibility of people of color, LGBT individuals and their communities at the university.
