Brian Roberts, vice president for information technology at The University of Texas at Austin since 2006, has resigned and will return to the faculty in the College of Liberal Arts, effective immediately.
Kevin Hegarty, vice president and chief financial officer, will oversee the Information Technology Services division, said William Powers Jr., president of the university. Hegarty, Powers said, will lead implementation of a new plan for information technology outlined by the Strategic Information Technology Advisory Committee established by the president in fall 2008.
“Brian Roberts has served with distinction as vice president for information technology,” Powers said. “In leading the Strategic Information Technology Advisory Committee he has helped shape an ambitious agenda and a new framework for information technology services at the university. I have deeply appreciated his willingness to move from the academic arena into the administrative field.”
“I am honored to have had the opportunity to serve the university as vice president for information technology and work with the talented staff members who provide such critical services to our campus,” Roberts said. “After spending over half my academic career in administration I look forward with great anticipation to rejoining my faculty colleagues.”
Prior to his appointment as vice president, Roberts was an associate dean in the College of Liberal Arts, overseeing a number of the college’s strategic needs, including information technology. He has been involved in key information technology positions at the university for the past 15 years.
Roberts, who joined the university in 1985 as a member of the Government Department, is a professor of government and economics.
Roberts, an award-winning teacher, earned a bachelor’s degree from Trinity College and a doctor’s degree from Washington University in St. Louis.
