HEADLINE: Attack of the Toaster Oven
(From a column in which Michael Starbird, professor in the Department of Mathematics, talks about the clustering of random events)
The problem is that most people have the wrong idea about what constitutes randomness, Professor Starbird said. What most of us think of as randomness is occurrences that are evenly distributed — the opposite of clustering. But in fact, clustering is a natural part of randomness.
”I do an experiment with my students where I tell them to think about flipping a coin 200 times, and to write a set of random ‘h’s’ and ‘t’s’ on the blackboard to indicate whether it came up heads or tails,” he said. ”Then I tell them to actually flip a coin 200 times, and write those results next to the other list. I leave the room when this is happening. When I come back, I can always tell them which list was actually random.”
