FOUR UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT AUSTIN RESEARCHERS RECEIVE
PRESIDENTIAL EARLY CAREER SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING AWARDS
Four assistant professors at The University of Texas at Austin have received Presidential Early Career Awards for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE).
They are among 100 researchers from around the country to win the awards, the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on young professionals in the early stages of their independent research careers.
The University of Texas at Austin recipients are:
- Seth Bank, Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Cockrell School of Engineering
- Christopher Bielawski, Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, College of Natural Sciences
- Gregory A. Fiete, Department of Physics, College of Natural Sciences
- Xiaoqin Li, Department of Physics, College of Natural Sciences
All received their awards from the Department of Defense. They will receive up to $1 million over five years to further their study in support of critical government missions.

APPLICATIONS FOR EMERGING TECHNOLOGY FUND WANTED
The Central Texas Regional Center of Innovation and Commercialization (CenTex RCIC) is seeking applications for start-up funding from the Texas Emerging Technology Fund. Central Texas-based entrepreneurs, inventors and businesses seeking early-stage investment in new, technology-based, private entrepreneurial entities that collaborate with a Texas public or private institution of higher education may qualify. Applications are due July 28, 2009.

“I am somewhat at a loss to understand what they are doing,” said University of Texas professor Lucas A. “Scot” Powe Jr., a historian of the Supreme Court. “Her decisions are so middle of the road. Maybe they are trying to make the case that unless you agree with Roberts, Scalia, Thomas and Alito, you are necessarily biased.”
