A day camp designed to promote higher education for 31 homeless/at risk children will be held Aug. 3-6 at The University of Texas at Austin School of Social Work.

The children from Pflugerville Independent School District are part of a program called Kids University.

Workshops in robotics, dance, arts and crafts and science experiments will be offered as well as a tour of the campus and bowling at the Texas Union.

The children also will meet several university football players, tour the stadium and participate in a ropes course through the Georgetown Parks and Recreation Department. The ropes course is an outdoor event that teaches problems solving and team work, according to Kathy Armenta, clinical associate professor of social work.

“I am excited for the School of Social Work to host the day camp,” said Armenta. “Kids University is a creative and innovative program that will give youth valuable experiences on a university campus with college students as counselors and guides.”

The event will provide the children with enrichment activities and curriculum that show possibilities and expand horizons, Armenta said.
