Background: The Alley Flat Initiative is a collaboration among the School of Architecture at The University of Texas at Austin, the Austin Community Design and Development Center, and the Guadalupe Neighborhood Development Corporation.
The initiative proposes a new sustainable, green affordable housing alternative for the Austin community. The long-term objective is to create an adaptive and self-perpetuating delivery system for sustainable and affordable housing for the city. The “delivery system” not only includes efficient housing designs that incorporate sustainable technologies but also innovative methods of financing and home ownership to benefit all Austin neighborhoods.
The first alley flat is at 1804-B Second St. and was completed in 2008. The home earned a five-star green rating from Austin’s Green Building program.
