PROFESSOR NAMED ‘BRAVE THINKER’
Camille Parmesan, associate professor in the Section of Integrative Biology, has been named a Brave Thinker by The Atlantic magazine.
The magazine defined its 27 brave thinkers as “a small group of men and women who have risked their careers, reputations, fortunes, and, in some cases, even lives to advance ideas that upend an established order.”
Parmesan was chosen because “She’s devising new ways to save endangered species from climate change,” according to the magazine.

CHANGE MADE TO VISITING RESEARCHER/SCHOLAR PROGRAM
Effective Nov. 2, 2009, the Visiting Researcher/Scholar Program will be incorporated into Phase 2 of the Human Resource Management System (HRMS), under the Affiliated Worker module. The HRMS document will serve as the nominating instrument, while a curriculum vitae and appropriate agreement will continue to be required as backup documentation. Please consult with your departmental human resources manager for internal procedures on visiting scholar nominations and access to HRMS.
For more information about the visiting researcher/scholar program contact liza@austin.utexas.edu, 471-2877.

UNIVERSITY TESTS NEW RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY DATABASE
The university is evaluating a new research database called SciVal, which provides a service similar to that of the Community of Science. SciVal will remain open to the university community, free of charge, through April 30, 2010.
You should send feedback about SciVal to the Office of the Vice President for Research Office. at vp-research-sr@mail.utexas.edu

HEADLINE: When 2+2 Equals a Privacy Question
(From an article about digital privacy.)
Vitaly Shmatikov, an associate professor of computer science at the University of Texas at Austin and a co-author of the ”de-anonymization” study, says the researchers were able to analyze users’ public postings and connect that to their Netflix preferences — including how a person may have rated films with controversial themes. Those are choices a person may or may not want to make public, Dr. Shmatikov said.

People, Power, and Conflict in the Eurasian Migration System
RESEARCHER: Cynthia Buckley principal Investigator Timothy Heleniak (University of Maryland), Beth Mitchneck (University of Arizona) and Blair Ruble (Kennan Institute of the Woodrow Wilson International Center Scholars
AGENCY: National Science Foundation
AMOUNT: $960,345
The project will assess how international migration affects human security and patterns of international influence with focus on analysis of migration within Eurasia, where documentation is often inadequate. As a result, migration in the region is rarely included in debates over migration theory despite its large population and significance for U.S. foreign policy.
Focusing on the Russian Federation, the investigators explore how migration generates conflict and alters national power. Russia’s emergence as the core destination country within the Eurasian migration system, coupled with its increasing tendency towards authoritarian rule, challenges assumptions concerning the importance of liberal political orientations in destination states, and may pose a strategic challenge to U.S. interests within the region.
