The National Science Foundation plans to re-establish the option for grantees to apply for NSF funding opportunities on Grants.gov no later than Dec. 1, 2009. NSF continues to make all of its funding opportunities available on Grants.gov FIND.
EVALUATE SCIVAL, A RESEARCH OPPORTUNITY DATABASE
The University is in the process of evaluating a new research database called SciVal, which provides a service similar to that of the Community of Science. The system will remain open to UT free of charge through April 30, 2010. The information is live and current.
Send feedback about SciVal to: vp-research-sr@mail.utexas.edu

HEADLINE: Can These Parents Be Saved?
(From an article that describes a retreat from what it calls overprotective, helicopter parenting)
Some of the hovering is driven by memory and demography. This generation of parents, born after 1964, waited longer to marry and had fewer children. Families are among the smallest in history, which means our genetic eggs are in fewer baskets and we guard them all the more zealously. Helicopter parents can be found across all income levels, all races and ethnicities, says Patricia Somers of the University of Texas at Austin, who spent more than a year studying the species at the college level. “There are even helicopter grandparents,” she notes, who turn up with their elementary-school grandchildren for college-information sessions aimed at juniors and seniors.

Platform-Driven Innovation Within and Across Firms
RESEARCHERS: Geoffrey Parker, Tulane University; Marshall Van Alstyne, Boston University; and Edward Anderson, University of Texas at Austin
AGENCY: National Science FoundationAmerican Recovery and Reinvestment Act
AMOUNT: $703,950
In this set of studies, the research team examines questions about how to better coordinate innovation by means of platforms, including personal computers, cell phones, games, and telecommunications systems. They conduct work first at an industry level and then at a within-firm level, looking to understand principles pertinent to both external and internal innovation environments. The two projects should yield distinct but complementary insights into managing innovation.
