Event: Landmarks Public Art Program at The University of Texas at Austin will host a lecture by Art and Art History Professor Linda Henderson. Henderson will focus on three artists whose works are presented by Landmarks: Mark di Suvero, Friedrich Kiesler and Tony Smith. This event is free and open to the public.
When: Thursday, March 11, 5-6:30 p.m.
Where: Ernest Cockrell Jr. Hall (ECJ), room 1.202
Background: This discussion will explore the works by artists di Suvero, Kiesler and Smith, and the connections between their sculptures, each created in the United States at different moments in recent American history.
Henderson proposes geometry and science as meaningful ways to understand these sculptures, in relation to each other and beyond their traditional categorizations. Taking into consideration these artists’ shared concern for geometry, Henderson will discuss the ways in which their works suggest four-dimensional and non-Euclidean geometries of Einstein’s Relativity Theory. Henderson is a member of the Academy of Distinguished Teachers and holds the David Bruton Jr. Centennial Professorship in Art History at The University of Texas at Austin.
