Founded in 1999, The Project has become one of the largest one-day service events in the nation led by student leaders and the community. It successfully brings together more than 2,000 students, staff, faculty and community volunteers to assist Austin neighborhoods in need. Jobs are spread throughout a neighborhood and include painting, landscaping, trash pick-up, constructing playground equipment and other general projects specific to the site.

In the late 1960s, the St. John neighborhood began to experience a transformation from a rural to an urban neighborhood, and through the 1980s, it began to see an increase in crime, prostitution and poverty. Leaders in the community rose up and worked with the city to improve education and services in the neighborhood.
