The West Mall is the heart of campus — a vibrant crossroads for the university and an intersection of people who represent cultures from all parts of the world. Symbolic expressions of individuality, interests, politics and beliefs are everywhere: on T-shirts, buttons and backpacks; as piercings and tattoos; as uniforms, kafias and skull caps; as brand-name fashions and recycled threads; on library books and underground magazines.
These photographs were taken on five afternoons during the past four years. The students, faculty and staff in the photos were stopped without prior arrangement on the West Mall as they were passing through, capturing their personalities exactly as they are. They are a sample of the richness and variety of the people who create a community at The University of Texas at Austin.
