The Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs will host a three-day “Homecoming Celebration,” March 24, 25 and 26, to mark the arrival of new Dean Robert Hutchings, in addition to the official dedication of the newly renovated LBJ School building.
Events have been planned to allow prospective students, alumni and friends of the School to become acquainted with Hutchings and the School’s dynamic new facilities. The School will present events that exemplify its mission to engage top public policy makers in thoughtful dialogue and debate.
The celebration begins on March 24 with an official building dedication featuring University of Texas at Austin President William Powers Jr. and Hutchings. At the close of the program, there will be a ceremonial ribbon and cake-cutting. The dedication ceremony will be followed by an event presented by the LBJ School’s Center for Politics and Governance featuring former U. S. Secretary of State James Baker III, who will be interviewed by Texas Tribune CEO and CPG Fellow Evan Smith in the Lady Bird Johnson Auditorium.
On March 25, the celebration will continue with the Hispanic Leadership Summit: “Education: the Key to Unlock our Future,” a day-long examination of emerging policy issues, bringing together academic and prominent leaders from across the country, hosted by the Center for Politics and Governance. The summit will include panel discussions titled “Closing the Education Gap” and “The Role of Universities in Developing the Next Generation of Leaders.”
The “Homecoming Celebration” concludes on March 26 with a focus on LBJ students and alumni. Beginning in the morning, the School will host an “open house” for alumni, who are invited throughout the day to tour the newly modernized LBJ School facilities. Current students will conduct group tours as well. At noon, alumni from around the country will talk with current and admitted students about their experiences and careers working in various fields. The day culminates with a presentation by Hutchings, to which the LBJ School community is invited, followed by the dean’s reception hosted by Hutchings and his wife at the LBJ School.
