Dr. Daniel T. Slesnick, associate dean for research and technology in the College of Liberal Arts at The University of Texas at Austin, has been appointed the university’s vice provost for resource management.
Provost Steven Leslie said Slesnick would fill a position that will become vacant Aug. 31, the date on which Executive Vice Provost Stephen Monti plans to retire after having worked 43 years for the university. Slesnick’s duties will include budgeting, faculty and research commitments, space, and policy development and application.
Leslie said Slesnick has accepted a half-time appointment from March 1 through May 31, with the remainder of his work time during this period involving his faculty position in economics. His responsibilities with the Office of the Provost would change to full time on June 1.
“I look forward to working with Dan Slesnick,” said Leslie. “Dan is a distinguished faculty member and a skilled and experienced administrator. He is well prepared to tackle his very significant institutional responsibilities as our new vice provost for resource management.”
“I am truly honored and excited to work with Provost Leslie and the outstanding team he has assembled,” said Slesnick. “That said, I am well aware of the fact that I have very big shoes to fill. All of us who have worked in an administrative capacity know how important Dr. Monti has been to the university. He is truly irreplaceable. I will work hard to maintain the high standard he has set for service to the university.”
Slesnick, who received his bachelor of science degree in mathematics summa cum laude from the University of Washington and his doctorate in economics from Harvard University, began his teaching career at The University of Texas at Austin in 1982 as an assistant professor of economics. He became an associate professor in 1986 and has been a professor of economics since 1993. From 1998 to 2007 he was the Rex G. Baker Jr. Professor of Political Economy. He has been associate dean for research and technology in the College of Liberal Arts since 2007.
Slesnick is a Phi Beta Kappa and a recipient of the H.B. Earhart Fellowship and the Carl Fink Jr. Endowed Faculty Fellowship in Economics. He authored a book in 2001 titled “Consumption and Social Welfare: Living Standards and their Distribution in the United States” and has written numerous articles on economics for various publications.
