In this second installment of an audio portrait series that explores the African Diaspora, Dr. Frank Guridy, associate professor of history and African Diaspora Studies, discusses his forthcoming book “Forging Diaspora: Afro-Cubans and African Americans in the World of Empire and Jim Crow.” People of African descent had diverse cultures and experiences and lived in different nation-states, he said, and “while having an understanding of their particular national citizenship, they also have had, and continue to have, a history of themselves, an identity that transcends the boundaries of a nation-state.”
The university has created a new academic department devoted to the study of the African Diaspora, the movement of Africans and their descendants to places throughout the world, particularly the descendants of black Africans who were enslaved and brought to the western hemisphere.
