Event: “An Uncanny Beauty: A Celebration of Deborah Hay” performance and symposium.
When: Wednesday, April 7, 7 p.m. performance; and Thursday, April 8, 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., symposium with 7 p.m. reception.
Where: The performance will be held at The Long Center for the Performing Arts, Rollins Studio Theatre at 701 West Riverside Dr. The symposium will be held at the Blanton Museum of Art, Edgar Smith Building (MLK Boulevard at Congress Avenue).
Background: Deborah Hay is a seminal figure in American modern dance since her participation in the Judson Dance Theater in the 1960s, working as a noted choreographer and performer. She will perform “No Time To Fly,” a 50-minute solo dance she was commissioned to choreograph by the Danspace Project. An integral element of the solo will be the role of Jennifer Tipton, who will create the lighting. Her work has been pivotal to Hay’s aesthetic vision in several pieces of the last decade.
Susan Foster, scholar, choreographer and dancer from UCLA, will give the symposium keynote. Themes throughout the discussions include Consciousness/Body/Practice, Politics/Counterculture/Community and Aesthetics/Art/History.
The performance and symposium are open to the public and free of charge. However, due to the overwhelming response, all seats for the performance have been reserved. Reservations are not needed for the symposium.
