Event: Dr. D.A. Henderson will describe his and others’ efforts to eradicate smallpox through massive international efforts during his keynote lecture at the “Become a Disease Detective: Discover Public Health!” conference, a two-day event for students at The University of Texas at Austin interested in public health.

When: 5-6:30 pm, Wednesday, April 7.

Where: Texas Union, Ballroom (Room 3.202), The University of Texas at Austin campus

Background: Dr. D.A. Henderson became director of a worldwide campaign to eradicate smallpox in 1967, and 2010 marks the 30th anniversary of its elimination.

The book “Smallpox–The Death of a Disease: The Inside Story of Eradicating a Worldwide Killer” is Henderson’s personal story of how he led the World Health Organization’s campaign to wipe out smallpox–the only disease in history to have been eradicated. Some have called this feat the greatest scientific and humanitarian achievement of the past century.

Henderson will be present at three book signings during the conference on Wednesday, April 7 in the Texas Union Ballroom. Signings will occur at 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
