The eighth installment of the Benson Latin American Collection’s annual ¡A Viva Voz! features Austin-born psychedelic Afro-Latin funk band Ocote Soul Sounds.
The self-professed “coconut rockers” will lead a celebration of music and dance at the Benson Latin American Collection beginning at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 8.
Featuring the bandleaders of Grupo Fantasma and Antibalas — Adrian Quesada and Martin Perna, respectively — Ocote Soul Sounds has been described as “sounding like a sun-kissed Brazilian soundtrack from the ’70s.”
The event will include a brief presentation by DJ t-kay (Hip Hop Hooray, KOOP 91.7 FM), with a light reception prior to the performance.
¡A Viva Voz! was developed by former Benson Director Ann Hartness to highlight the library’s broad Mexican American and U.S. Latino resources, engage the local community and to celebrate U.S. Latino culture.
Past events have featured an array of guests, such as renowned Latina artist Carmen Lomas Garza, author David Rice, actor Luiz Avalos and comic artists Los Bros Hernandez.
