CBS News Executive Named College of Communication Outstanding Alumnus

CBS News Producer and former Daily Texan Editor Mary E. Walsh (B.J. ’77) has been named the 2009-2010 College of Communication Outstanding Alumnus.

CBS News Producer and former Daily Texan Editor Mary E. Walsh (B.J. ’77) has been named the 2009-2010 College of Communication Outstanding Alumnus.

During the course of her career, she has covered the explosion of space shuttle Challenger, the bombing of Pan Am flight 103, Geraldine Ferraro’s vice presidential campaign, Vice President George H.W. Bush’s presidential campaign and the American military across the United States and around the globe.

As the national security producer for CBS News, Walsh produces stories for the CBS Evening News and 60 Minutes. She has been assigned to the Pentagon since 1993 working with CBS News National Correspondent David Martin covering the American military throughout the world, including Southeast Asia, Europe and the Middle East. Earlier in her CBS career, she was based in Tokyo where she was responsible for news coverage in all parts of Asia- Burma, Cambodia, China, Japan, Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. Walsh began her career at CBS News in 1979 as assistant to the political director in Washington D.C.

Walsh, along with Martin, has won two Alfred I. DuPont awards from Columbia University, the Joan Shorenstein Barone Award for Excellence in Journalism and a Wilbur Award from the Religious Communicators Council. She has won two individual Emmy Awards.

Walsh will be recognized during the College of Communication Honors Day Convocation at 5:30 p.m., today, at the Texas Union Ballroom.

The Outstanding Alumnus Award is given each year to a College of Communication graduate who has made outstanding contributions to his or her profession and society. Prior recipients have included Tex Schramm and Lady Bird Johnson.
