The University of Texas at Austin will host its first symposium on health care delivery titled “Innovation in Health Care Delivery Systems: Maintaining Quality and Reducing Costs Through Management and Information Technology,” at the ATandT Executive Education and Conference Center on April 29 and 30.
Reuben McDaniel, Ph.D., the primary organizer of the symposium and professor of information management at the McCombs School of Business, has been studying the health care industry for the last 20 years.
“Health care delivery problems are tough ones where conflicting issues of access, cost and quality come together for all to see,” McDaniel said. “Our goal is to develop insights that might improve the condition of patients and/or make it easier for clinicians to do their work.”
The symposium includes nine nationally recognized featured speakers, with the keynote address by University of Texas System Chancellor Francisco Cigarroa, M.D. Also featured are Ted Shortliffe, M.D., president and CEO of the American Medical Informatics Association and member of the faculty of The University of Texas School of Health Information Sciences at Houston, and James B. Thomas, Ph.D., dean of the Smeal College of Business at Pennsylvania State University.
Faculty from a variety of disciplines and perspectives will present their research on innovation in health care delivery, from business to nursing, law to biomedical engineering and health information technology, and social work and public policy to communication and advertising. In addition to research presentations, the symposium features a panel with nationally recognized industry representatives such as Norman Chenven, M.D., the CEO and founder of Austin Regional Clinic, and James M. O. Rubin, M.D., founder and CEO of Tenzing Health, and featured speakers Donde Ashmos Plowman, Ph.D., Paul Nutting, M.D., Ruth Anderson, Ph.D., R.N., and Violina Rindova, Ph.D.
The symposium is sponsored by the McCombs School of Business, the George McMillan Fleming Center for Law and Innovation in Biomedicine and Healthcare, the Cockrell School of Engineering and the IC2 Institute.
