Former U.S. Diplomat Shares Insider’s View on Investing in Latin America

Event: Former U.S. Ambassador Hector E. Morales Jr. will speak with Houston-area investors about the economic climate in Latin America and investment opportunities in the region. A leading Latin American scholar, a journalist and a business leader will join Morales on a panel that will discuss the region’s economy.

Background: Businessman Hector E. Morales Jr. served under Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama as permanent representative to the Organization of American States (OAS). He will open the Faces of the Americas/Rostros de las Américas speaker series with a talk titled “Current Economic and Political Developments in Latin America and the Investment Environment.” Morales will provide an insider’s view on the economic climate in Latin America and share how U.S. investors can effectively engage with the region.

At the OAS, Morales was the lead negotiator in preparations for the Fifth Summit of the Americas in 2009. He has also served as U.S. executive director to the Inter-American Development Bank and as a member of the board of directors of the Inter-American Foundation. He is vice chairman of the New Yorkbased investment firm Global Strategic Associates and of counsel at the law firm of Baker and McKenzie in Washington, D.C.

The panelists are: Gaspar V. García, vice president and financial consultant, RBC Wealth Management; Jenalia Moreno, business and Hispanic news reporter with the Houston Chronicle; and Peter Ward, professor in the LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin and an expert in U.S.-Mexico relations.

Organized by the Teresa Lozano Long Institute of Latin American Studies (LLILAS) at The University of Texas at Austin, Faces of the Americas/Rostros de las Américas brings dynamic voices from Latin America and the U.S. to Texas to discuss business and events in the region. The discussions take place four times a year and include meet-and-greet receptions featuring Latin American coffees.
