Event: A celebration of the achievements and the closing of the space used by the Creative Research Laboratory (CRL) as a site for contemporary art and design, providing year-round scheduling of exhibitions and community programming by students and faculty in the Department of Art and Art History at The University of Texas at Austin. The CRL has been a venue that has provided emerging artists a first exhibition and seasoned artists a home base. The CRL will celebrate the closing with a prom including a “Create Your Own Attire” competition, a photo booth and music played to a symphony of candles and rainbow flame quartz to help bid farewell to CRL. The event is free and open to the public.

When: May 28 from 8-11 p.m.

Where: CRL: 2832 East Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd., inside Flatbed World Headquarters.

Background: The CRL’s legacy will be carried on in the department’s new exhibition space, the Visual Arts Center, through a new student-run organization called the Center Space Project. The student group is in charge of the Center Space gallery within the Visual Arts Center and other activities initiated by students. Its members work with fellow students, faculty, alumni and visiting artists to create engaging shows and programs.
