With more than 90 research units and annual research funding of more than $500 million, The University of Texas at Austin is one of the largest public institutions in the nation, and here in Austin, residents try to keep it weird.
Combining the university’s intellectual capital and the eclectic vibe of the city, Austin ranks among the top places in the nation to live and do business.
In its latest ratings, Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazine named Austin No. 1 in its “10 Best Cities for the Next Decade.” It cited venture-capital funds, the abundance of business associations, incubators, educational opportunities and networking events as vital factors in the city’s optimistic outlook.
Austin also has been touted the No. 2 most innovative city by Forbes magazine in its “America’s Most Innovative Cities” ranking. Forbes pointed out Austin’s impressive number of patents, and even cited the Cockrell School of Engineering as one of the city’s “secret weapons in the innovation race.”
