The University of Texas School of Law will host the 33rd annual Health Law Professors Conference on June 3-5. About 150 professionals who teach health law, bioethics, or similar subjects will attend the registration-only conference in Austin.
The Law School, the George McMillan Fleming Center for Law and Innovation in Biomedicine and Healthcare and the American Society of Law, Medicine and Ethics are primary sponsors of the conference, which is structured to provide participants with updates on issues at the forefront of law and medicine and with opportunities to share strategies, ideas and materials.
This is the first time the conference has been hosted by the Law School and its Fleming Center, which was established in 2008 by George M. Fleming, a 1971 Law School graduate. The Fleming Center addresses human concerns implicated at the junction of law, medicine, ethics, public policy and the management of health care delivery.
“The HLPC is a welcoming, inclusive event that helps health law teachers renew and expand their professional networks and engage the important issues in our field,” said UT Law Professor William M. Sage, chair of the host committee. “The Law School is particularly honored to host the HLPC during the inaugural year of national health care reform.”
Sage, who holds the James R. Dougherty Chair for Faculty Excellence at the Law School and is the vice provost for health affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, will speak at Friday’s first plenary session on access to health care.
Several other UT Law faculty members assisted with the conference and will be either panelists or moderators, including John Robertson, Charles Silver, Bernard Black, Ronen Avraham, David Adelman, Michael Churgin and Eden Harrington.
The panels will be held in various Law School locations, including the Susman Godfrey Atrium, the Charles I. Francis Auditorium and classrooms 3.124, 3.125, 3.126 and 3.127.
