Background: LLILAS is hosting a two-and-a-half day professional development seminar for professionals from the United States and Latin America who want to gain perspective on the latest advances in communications in a Latin American context. Experts from the university, journalists and political advertising strategists will talk about their work and recent innovations in their field.
James Aldrete, president and creative director of the political advertising firm Message Audience and Presentation that created several ads targeted to Latinos for the Obama 2008 campaign, will lead a session about political communication. Donna De Cesare, associate professor from the College of Communication and a photojournalist known for her work in Central America, will lead a session about documentary photojournalism. Additional session topics include: social media, electronic newspaper design, investigative reporting, the Freedom of Information Act, information technology and new media. Participants will have the opportunity to tour the studios of Univision Austin, KUT Radio and to view the Woodward and Bernstein Watergate papers at the Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center. The seminar will be presented in English and Spanish, with simultaneous translation provided.
This is part of a new initiative offered by LLILAS. Future seminar topics will include law, politics, education and energy. Seminars feature small classes of 20 to 30 participants, giving participants extensive time to interact with speakers. Speakers come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including: University of Texas at Austin faculty, state government officials, entrepreneurs, directors of nonprofits, and state and federal judges. LLILAS can also create customized seminars to meet the specific needs of a group, making sure participants derive the maximum benefit.
